Constructed in the early 1900’s, this original Edwardian residence with heritage overlay, has been extended and efficiently remodelled into a functional family home.
Keeping in-line with the buildings traditional exterior, the rear of the home has been completely redesigned, affectionately embracing existing features of the home, whilst enhancing modern day-to-day living and entertaining.
|
The inspiration for renovating and extending was the client’s desire for a feeling of spaciousness, both inside and outside the home. With a flow of sophisticated practicality, the home now comprises of a second level, led by an impressive staircase to comprise: Rumpus Room, Fifth Bedroom, Fourth Bedroom/ Study with Store Room/ Walk-in-robe and separate Bathroom.
Upon entering the home on the ground floor, the extension includes a repositioned Laundry and Powder room to the left, and a complete Bathroom on the right. A distinctive Kitchen forms part of the open plan living area, with Dining and Family designated areas.
To maximise natural light and create an atmosphere of spaciousness in the new living area, the open plan arrangement takes full advantage by incorporated bay window as part of the Kitchen layout, and two sets of tall double French doors that embrace the newly constructed Verandah/ Entertaining area.
Great lengths have been taken to ensure visual connection from outside the home to within, as well as from room to room. Carrying the original Edwardian/ Victorian internal theme, the extension |

combines 3600mm ceiling height, large Victorian architrave, skirting and cornices. Strong identification of existing characteristics of the home, have (wherever possible), been reused or recycled and, in cases reconstructed, as constant reminder of the link this project has with its heritage. Such examples are implemented into the extension, and include slate roof tiles, windows including lead light, a replicated hall arch, as well as a consistency with the selection of colours, materials and complimentary accessories.
On a block size of more than 748m2, the home does not compromise the client’s yard, or appear to be over sized, despite the overall extension size being more than 194sqm. The South/ West direction of the extension, advantageously introduces plenty of natural light, ventilation and a comfortable climate, enhancing the appeal of space and comfort.
A Colorbond roof for the rear Verandah/ Entertaining area, concealed from the front of the home, is this same roof used for the Garage, and passionately ties the undercover designated outside spaces, including the front Verandah in classic Edwardian theme. |
The main roof structure of the dwelling was derived from alternate design thinking, to keep in-line with heritage and comprise all the clients needs, entailing a steep roof pitch of 40° with incorporation of box gutter. It is this part of the design, that flawlessly conceals any sign of an extension from the streetscape, however once inside will draw visitors to the warmly open living area, as intended.
